In the marketplace across from the Röttingen Town Hall, the Röttingen Sundail-Trail begins with an impressive “Equatorial Sundial”. This sundial stands out because of its unique feature: two cones positioned on its central axis. As the seasons change, either the smaller or the larger cone casts its shadow onto the dial, giving us the current time.

To properly adjust the sundial according to the sun’s changing path throughout the year, one must pay attention to the figure-eight curve located on the middle bar of the sundial, just below the axis. With the help of this curve, also known as lemniscate, along with the current date, the sundial gives the visitor a principle that should be followed to get a nearly accurate time indication. On the one hand there is information on which cone to observe. On the other hand, it also indicates whether the left or the right shadow edge of the selected cone will give the precise time. This thoughtful design ensures that the sundial remains accurate and functional year-round, showcasing both the ingenuity and beauty of this historical timekeeping method.
